“Don’t worry, Yosho. You’ll be the first one I call.”
Akamatsu turned to Soblen and winked. “Goodbye, doctor…”
“I’ll go with you,” he interrupted. “See you later, Smith.” They walked quickly onto the airfield.
“Take care of him, doc,” the Japanese began.
“Don’t worry. I, too, was authorized to stay in Palm Beach.”
“He’s still in love, isn’t he?”
“Still, Yosho, and I have the feeling that it’s just going to hurt more and more as time passes. Smith is a man with only one love. Mie Azusa is a pretty girl, but above all she’s a victim. That’s enough to purify the feelings Smith has for her. He doesn’t think that she… Do you know that he rented room 304 at the Hilton?”
“That’s where Mie Azusa came to see him!”
“Yes. He thinks that she’ll come back to the same room some day between 9 and 10 in the morning.”
Akamatsu bit his lip. “That very well could happen. But it could also happen that the Great Brain gets two birds with one stone when it comes to steal the Boss’ corpse.”
“We’ve thought about that,” Soblen said coldly. “Without knowing it, Smith Beffort is being used as bait. He’s watched day and night by his colleagues at the FBI and if anyone touches a hair on his head, they will be instantly transformed into a clay pigeons. You can leave with peace of mind, Yosho.”
Smith Beffort was leaning on the balcony outside his window. It had just struck midnight, but he was not sleepy. He was thinking of Mie Azusa and he knew that he would find no rest until he freed her from her chains.
There was no reason for it, but he was convinced that in a short time he would receive a visit from her. That was what he was waiting for.
